Today I’m hurting from head to toe from two things: reclaiming clay and playing soccer. I am doing a ceramics project this weekend with kids from Aba House – a community arts center where kids make books and other art to sell. (More about Aba House coming soon.) The profits go toward buying the students school supplies and other items. To get ready for our ceramics project, we first uncovered and recycled clay from the pit.
Clay is really heavy from all the water

This clay is too wet for sculpting, so we pulled out leaves and shards, then patted it onto the concrete to dry in the sun. When it is the perfect consistency, malleable but not sticky, we can wedge it up and start making art.
I had a blast playing soccer with the students after we worked with the clay. In the field next door, kids navigate between palm trees to play barefoot soccer in the sand. Here’s a short clip:
