In Teshie-Nungua, a neighboring ocean town to Accra, there are several groups of coffin sculptors who make truly unique casket forms in the shape of popular objects. (I know coffins are morbid and shouldn’t be fun, but these are.) The wooden boxes are some of my favorite works of contemporary art. After checking out some coffins at local art galleries, we went to a studio to meet Cedi and Eric, father and son owners of one of the workshops. The pictures below show their craftsmen hard at work preparing caskets for upcoming funerals. In this line of business, the artists construct works with only a couple days notice.
